Uluru, Ayers Rock
Perhaps Australia’s most iconic sight, Uluru, the aboriginal name given to this great rock jutting out from the land in the middle of Australia, is something to behold and marvel at. Glistening bronze, you can walk around its perimeter and camp nearby, seeing the rock at sunset or at any other time you might choose. Pay a visit to close by Alice Springs to see inner Australia at its finest and learn more about aboriginal culture and how they’ve melded into the landscape of modern day Australia.
Jim Thompson’s House, Bangkok
The lesser-visited Jim Thompson’s house is located slap bang in the middle of Silom amid the skyscraper tenement blocks and super modern air-conditioned malls. Former home to silk trade merchant Jim Thompson, who disappeared mysteriously on a trip to Malaysia in the 60’s, the house is an interesting sight, if mainly due to its juxtaposition against the futuristic skyline that surrounds it. Built on stilts and backing out on to the canal, this is traditional Thai-style at its finest.
Great Barrier Reef, Cairns
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the modern natural wonders of the world. Home to thousands of species of marine life, this protected park can be found off the shores of the laid-back Australian city of Cairns and visited in a day. Simply one of the best destinations and reefs to scuba dive in the world, visitors are surely going to be spoiled by the underwater beauty that lives and breathes here.
Phi Phi Islands
Situated in Thailand’s Krabi province, the Phi Phi Islands are some of the best natural wonders in all of Southeast Asia. Just a little off Phuket, these rock formations and beautiful beaches can be enjoyed on a single day trip or more. Nighttime, however, is when it most comes alive, with revellers taking to the beaches to enjoy full moon parties and more. One of Thailand’s most exciting and stunning places to spend a couple of days.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
A steel through arch bridge spanning Sydney’s central business district and North Shore, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a symbol of modern Australian prosperity and engineering and one that absolutely should not be missed if spending time in Australia’s most iconic city. Completed in 1932, the bridge offers amazing sites of Sydney Harbour and beyond. A real testament to a thriving country that’s come a long way since its colonisation a couple of hundred years ago.
Khao Yi National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in it’s own right, Khao Yai is Thailand’s second largest national park and features over 2,000 square kilometres of natural splendour. Spanning four provinces, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi and Nakhon Ratchasima, the park has peaks, forests, valleys, caves and waterfalls. Three hours from Bangkok, it’s easily accessible too.
