Located off the southern coast of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea, diving in the Similan islands is a fun, exciting adventure for people of all abilities.

While there are many places to scuba dive in Thailand, diving in the Similan Islands is not to be missed. If possible, try to plan a trip to this small outcrop of land in the middle of the sea for it will be an experience you won’t want to pass up.

Geography

The Similan Islands are eleven different islands, named Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two adjoining islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong and the recently added Ko Bon and Ko Tachai. Because there are so many, the islands are referred to in number, starting at 1 in the south and ending at 11 in the north.

All of the islands are part of a national park which covers 140 square kilometres in total. 14 of the square miles refer to the Similan Islands themselves.

Similan Islands, Thailand

The islands are about 50 kilometres from the coast of Thailand, with the nearest mainland town being Khao Lak. The land was made from hot magma that came to the surface over 65 million years ago. The rock has since been smoothed down by glacial ice and the tides of the sea. About 5000 years ago, coral reefs formed around the magma rocks, making them the oldest in all of Thailand.

Although the 2004 tsunami hit the area hard, thankfully the islands and the coral reef were relatively undamaged, thanks to the fact that the water is quite deep in the area, which protected everything.

Over time, sediment and dirt has found its way to the tops of the rock islands, and as a result they are covered in tropical jungle. There are even some beaches with bright white sand.

Marine Life

Diving around the Similan Islands is considered one of the best places in the world, and once you swim underwater you’ll know why. The waters are filled with a rich diversity of fish species. There are lionfish and clownfish galore. The waters are also home to manta rays and whale sharks.

On Koh Huyong there is a turtle breeding facility and as a result, access to that island is restricted.

While there is an abundance of sea life, what makes diving in the Similan Islands the best is that the waters are crystal clear. Whatever is swimming, you will be able to see. Unfortunately, one aspect of diving that is negative is that in 2010 the coral has fallen victim to coral bleaching. It is recovering, but it is a slow process.

Other Animals

In addition to the diverse sea life, the Similan islands are also home to a number of on land animals. There are the famous Nicobar pigeons as well as flying foxes.

The islands are home to a number of laying hen chicks, so be careful where you step so as to avoid disturbing their nests.

Specific Islands

While all diving trips will take you past all of the islands, they do vary in their landscape and types of animals that inhabit them.

Koh Similan is the largest island and features a large bay called Horseshoe Bay. The water is quite shallow and better for snorkelling rather than scuba diving. Its sand is often compared to white flour. Next to the bay is a towering rock formation that you can climb, and it provides a stunning view of the islands.

Koh Pa Yu has shallow and deep water diving and is often the most preferred location of scuba divers. The east side has a hard coral reef and a soft coral reef, allowing for different fish species to make themselves at home. There is also a coral mound on the north side. The island is all rock and has no beach.

Koh Miang has large rocks on its island but soft corals and plenty of fish in the water. There are a number of ducks that make their home here.

Koh Ba Ngu has a fantasy mount complex that is filled with soft corals and sea fans. Scuba diving is best of the northeast coast of this island.

Koh Bon has larger sea creatures including barracudas, sharks, batfish and manta rays.

Best time to Visit Similan Islands

Before you plan your vacation to the Similan Islands, make sure they are actually open. The high season is between December and April because the rainy monsoons to not make an appearance. From May 16 to November 15, the national park is closed.

Travel Starting Points

There are a number of places that you can start your journey to the Similan Islands from. From these different places you can book a dive trip. Trips are usually four days and four nights but can be longer or shorter, depending on demand. To enter the national park, it costs 500 baht per person plus 200 baht per diver per day. Most tours do not include these fees in their package prices.

While trips may say they are from Phuket, it is actually the Phuket area, so be sure to pay attention to the specific location of departure. Departure points could be from Chalong, Patong or even Tap Lamu. Most trips will offer pickups from major beaches.

While smaller than Phuket, Khao Lak is the mainland town closest to the Similan Islands. There are a number of dive centers in the town that offer trips. There are also a few places that offer dive trips from Koh Lanta, which is further south than Phuket.

Where to Sleep

Because most divers book sleep and stay trips, most likely the boat is where you’ll be sleeping. If, however, you’ve taken your own boat to the islands, there are a few options. Tents and bungalows are available to rent through the National Park headquarters in Tab Lamu, or if you’re LUCKY through specialty agents. Bungalows can only be found on Koh Miang and tents can be found on Koh Miang and Koh Similan.

Diving in the Similan Islands is a great experience. Clear blue waters are home to an abundance of sea life and no matter what your diving experience, it is an opportunity not to be missed.

Phuket is an amazing island in Thailand to visit, but as with most tropical locations, it’s important to know when the best time to go to Phuket is.

It is also important to know what to expect with the weather. This guide is meant to explain when the best time to go to Phuket is and also to expand on a Phuket weather guide.

When is the Best time to go to Phuket – Complete Overview

January and February

January is the most popular month for tourists. This is because rainfall is at its lowest and most days have clear blue skies and relatively low humidity. The water is also calm which is great for scuba diving and snorkeling. If you are travelling with children, you want to make sure the water is calm enough for swimming so that you don’t have to worry about strong currents.

Best time to go to Phuket, Thailand

Because January is so popular with tourists, the atmosphere in many nightclubs is at its peak. Bars and clubs are filled which adds to the excitement of night life. Alternatively, more tourists means more people on the road. Roads on Phuket are windy and when you had a lot of novice drivers who have decided to rent motorbikes for the first time, they can become quite dangerous.

If you are headed to Phuket in January but are worried about the crowds, stay at quieter locales like Kata Beach or Surin. Party town Patong will be bursting with tourists and can become quite noisy.

Depending on the lunar cycle of the year, Chinese New Year will fall in either January or February. Phuket offers many celebrations to celebrate this holiday including impressive fireworks displays.

March and April

March and April are still considered part of the high season, but towards the end of April, things start to visibly change on Phuket. Average temperatures begin rise making it harder to stay outdoors all day. If you’re ok with the heat, March and April are good months to visit Phuket as many hotels start to offer discounts. Swimming and diving are still good activities to pursue as the water is relatively calm. Nightlife is still exciting and parties can go all night long.

Songkran water festival, Thailand
Songkran water festival, Thailand

April is home to the Songkran water festival which makes it a lively time to visit. This celebration is in honor of the Thai New Year and celebrations include dousing everyone in refreshing water. If you like spontaneity then you’ll enjoy the festival, but if you find yourself unsure, best book during a different time as celebrations in Phuket can last up to seven days.

May and June

May brings the beginning of the low season which is marked by a drop in temperature and a rise in humidity. This is the beginning of the rainy season. Phuket is not as busy during this time and many hotels and resorts offer discounts of up to 50 % off. If you’re ok with some rain and are looking for a bargain, than this is a great time to consider.

Because there are less tourists in Phuket during May and June, beaches have more room on them and roads are less crowded. The overall atmosphere becomes relaxed.

Be careful if you’re headed out into the ocean. Some days the current can be fine and manageable, but some days it is best to avoid it all together. Swimming and diving should be done by strong swimmers only.

July, August, September and October

All part of the low season, July through October is relatively quiet on Phuket. While there are some sunny days, the majority of the days are filled with rains. There are many good discounts to be had on both airfare and accommodation in Phuket.

Clouds around the hills, Phuket

There is still some nightlife and if you want to go out, but don’t want to deal with gigantic crowds, this is a great time to visit Phuket.

Scuba diving is NOT generally done during these months because the water has strong currents and visibility is not at its best. While diving can still be done, it happens on a day by day basis.

November and December

The start of the high season can still bring a large amount of rainfall, but generally speaking the weather is nice enough to not have to worry too much. As November turns into December hotels start to fill up more and become more expensive.

Christmas celebration in Phuket
Christmas celebration in Phuket

December is very popular on Phuket because of its many holidays. Christmas is celebrated, but in a more commercial sense rather than a religion sense because of the islands predominant Buddhist following. Tourist parts of towns go all out for Christmas and you can find decorations and even a turkey dinner to help you celebrate the day.

Bang Tao Beach on the island of Phuket is a large, open bay home to one of Phuket’s longest beaches. The white sand beach stretches for six kilometers and is next to the village Cherng Talay.

While Bang Tao used to be a working area, primarily tin mining, the construction of the Laguna Complex changed the area into a tourist draw. Still, in the village of Cherng Talay there are many locals who fish, farm and rubber tap, just as their ancestors once did.

Laguna Complex

Bang Tao Beach was put on the tourist map thanks to the Laguna Complex. The Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort takes up a large part of the beach’s area. If you are looking for a place to stay on the beach, this is one of the biggest and best places to do so.

The resort itself is five hotel complexes and also has an 18 hole golf course. All of the rooms have incredible views and either overlook the ocean or the nearby lagoon. In addition to the standard rooms available, there are also luxury ones, including rooms with private terraces and villas on the grounds.

The Laguna Complex has many amenities including a kids club and a 55 meter water slide. There is also a spa to relax at.  There are three outdoor tennis courts and one indoor tennis court to play on. There are three different restaurant to choose from and two bars.

While on the beach there are sun loungers and umbrellas that can be used as well as complementary non-motorized water sports to engage in. Sailing and rowing boats are available to use.

If you want to really indulge yourself, you can be a member of an exclusive lounge club. This gets you VIP check-in, access to the private club lounge to have your means in and unlimited soft drinks, tea and coffee. Each day there is a happy hour that includes beer, wine and a tasting menu.

The golf course in the resort, Banyan Tree, is a championship golf course. It is open to residents staying at the complex but green fees still apply.

In the Water

Bang Tao Beach is set inside a large bay which can be quite shallow. Swimming her is nice as the water is calm and clear.

At the north of the bay you can find a smaller bay that is almost enclosed. At the mouth of this smaller bay is an abundance of coral which makes for great snorkeling.

Travel

Phuket Airport

Most people who visit Bang Tao Beach fly into Phuket Airport. The airport is 25 kilometers away from Bang Tao Beach and takes about 40 minutes travel time. Most people take a transfer which costs about 600 baht. If you opt for a metered taxi, it will be about 550 baht.

In town

If you are staying at the Laguna Complex then transportation is relatively simple. There are free shuttle buses that will take you between the different hotels and shopping centers. If your destination is across the lagoon, no worries as there is a ferry service that will take you.

If you want to leave the Laguna Complex for other places on the island, it can become expensive. Relatively few taxis travel to the complex so you will need to call and book a taxi. Chauffered cars are available to take you to other places. These can be expensive. For example, a one way trip to Patong would be about 600 baht.

One place that is near Bang Tao Beach is Surin Beach. This beautiful beach is only about a 20 minute walk away and can be reached by heading south on the main road.

Shopping

Bang Tao Beach shopping

While there are many shopping opportunities at the Laguna Complex, they are expensive. To get more local goods, travel into the nearby town where better deals can be had and more authentic pieces can be found.

Eating

If you are staying at the Laguna Complex, there are many good restaurants to choose from. However, it is worth taking a trip to the smaller, nearby town, or wandering down the beach for something local.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Bang Tao Beach is relatively calm. Most people that go out at night do so for good food or a few drinks. Patong Beach is much livelier and only 15 kilometers to the south. It is worth checking out for an evening and you can secure a taxi cab to return you back to your hotel. If you want a party atmosphere and to see what makes Bangla Road so famous, make sure you visit Patong Beach at night.

Other Accomodation

While the majority of tourists who spend their vacation at Bang Tao Beach end up at the Laguna Complex, there are other hotel options. Other hotels on the beach include a Best Western and other smaller hotels. [Read: Le Coral Hideaway Beyond Phuket Review]

Nearby Attractions

While resort life is always nice and relaxing, be sure to carve some time out of your stay at Bang Tao Beach to explore the rest of Phuket. Bang Tao Beach is on the west coast of Phuket and located in the middle of the coast line. Patong Beach is 15 kilometers to the south.

Khap Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary
Khap Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary

If you love animals, then try to plan a trip to the Khap Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary. Located in the northeast of Phuket, this national park covers 23 square kilometers of lush rain forest. It is home to exotic and endangered animal species on the island and is a tranquil place to get lost in nature. There are waterfalls, many hiking trails and a rehabilitation center for gibbon monkeys. The Wildlife Sanctuary is 15 kilometers northeast of Bang Tao Beach.

While many people go to Bang Tao Beach to relax and most stay at the massive Laguna Complex, it’s important to remember that there is much more to see on the island of Phuket. Definitely take advantage of all the amenities the resort has to offer, but also try to take time on your trip to explore other parts of Phuket.

Karon Beach is the second largest beach in Phuket, and loved by tourists. It is three kilometers long and while the beach itself is popular, the town is actually 20 kilometers from the town. Also of note is the fact that Karon is pronounced ‘Garon’.

Geography

Karon Beach, Thailand
Karon Beach, Thailand

Karon Beach has pristine white sand and actually makes a squeaking noise when you walk on it. Towards the southern part of the beach there is a coral reef that heads towards Kata and Bu Island. The beach itself is almost entirely public thanks to the fact that all of the hotels and resorts are situated across the street from the beach.

Restaurants

There are many good places to eat at Karon Beach. Most of the restaurants and bars can be found at the north central end of the beach, near the traffic circle. Alternatively, there are also restaurants near the south end of the beach, along Bangla Road.

Dino Park Restaurant, Karon Beach
Dino Park Restaurant, Karon Beach

Restaurants primarily feature traditional Thai cuisine, but many have international flavors as well. Karon Beach is actually very popular with Scandinavian tourists and as a result, many restaurants cater to their tastes.

Nightlife

Karon beach nightlife
Patong beach nightlife

Karon Beach is NOT really known for its night life. Most of the partying can be found in restaurants late at night of at some of the local bars. There aren’t many clubs and most people that visit tend to prefer good food and company to all night parties. Patong Beach is the center of nightlife on Phuket and a nice contrast to the serenity of Karon Beach.

Exercise

While Karon Beach lends itself to relaxation it is also designed to keep you moving. There is a wide path for both pedestrians and cyclists along the beach side of the road that runs the full three kilometer length of the beach.

At the north end of the beach, just a bit inland is a small lake called Karon Lake. Around this a path great for either cycling, jogging, or other forms of exercise.

Travel to Karon Beach

Phuket Airport

When travelling to Karon Beach, most people opt to fly to the island of Phuket. Phuket Airport is only 50 kilometers from Karon Beach and many hotels will offer you direct transportation for 1000 baht.

Taxi Cab

Another option from the airport is a taxi cab which can cost about 650 baht. Make sure you take a metered taxi, which will be yellow in color so as to avoid price gauging.

Mini bus

Taking a mini bus is very cheap, but can be lengthy as it will take many stops to drop off other passengers. If you happen to be staying the farthest away, your trip on the mini bus will be the longest. The cost is about 200 baht.

Airport bus

If you have a lot of time and not much money, the airport bus is the best deal. For only 100 baht, you can be transported to Karon Bach. The bus leaves about every hour, but only goes to Phuket Town. From there you will have to find a transfer to Karon Beach itself.

Travel in Karon Beach

The best way to travel around Karon Beach is to actually rent a motorbike which can accommodate up to two people. There are many shops that rent out motorbikes and cost 150 to 200 baht per day. If, however, you do not feel comfortable on a motorbike, stay away as the mountain roads can be a bit treacherous for inexperienced drivers.

Another option for travel within Karon Beach is the tuktuk. This is great if you just need help with short journeys, like to the beach or to a restaurant.

Travel from Karon Beach to Patong

Patong Beach is just 10 kilometers from Karon Beach, and most people that visit Karon Beach will make a half or full day trip to this livelier area.

To get to Patong from Karon Beach, most people end up taking a tuktuk. A one way ride will cost about 300 baht, but this price is very negotiable. If you turn down a driver enough times, he will eventually agree to 250 baht for the journey. When returning from Patong to Karon Beach, the price is actually cheaper as there are more tuktuks in Patong and competition is fiercer.

Things to do in Karon Beach

Get a massage

Getting a massage is a must experience when vacationing in Thailand. Karon Beach is able to mix together the relaxing nature of a massage with the tranquil beauty of the area. There are many spas to choose from, all of which have a host of different options to choose from.

Located on the center of the west coast of Phuket, Patong Beach is famous for both its beautiful beaches and lively night life. The area is very popular with young tourists looking to party hard. If you are thinking of taking a trip to Patong Beach, here is some useful information to help you plan an unforgettable experience.
Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand

Geography

Patong Beach is divided into different areas by three major roads. Beach Road on the coast and Thanon Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi which is more inland, run parallel and are bisected by Soi Bangla. All of these roads are one-way and form a bit of a circle bringing people and goods into the town via one road and out of the town via the other.

Nanai Road, which is more inland, is home to a number of expatriates as well as cheaper hotels and guestrooms. If you want a particularly cheap bottle of beer, this is the place to go. Most beers cost only 50 baht a bottle.

Climate

To get the most out of Patong Beach, visit the area between November and March when the weather is cool and comfortable. Temperatures during this time average between 24C and 32C. The hotter summer months can become quite unbearable as it is the rainy season, making the area very humid. In the summer temperatures average between 27C and 36C.

Transportation

Phuket International Airport

Most people who come to Patong Beach arrive on Phuket via the Phuket International Airport which is 35 kilometres north of Patong Beach. There are a number of ways to get from the airport to the beach, all costing a wide range of prices.

Phuket Town City Guide
Phuket International Airport

The most expensive option is the limousine taxi which can average about 800 baht for the 40 minute drive. If you take a taxi it will cost about 700 baht, but be careful about which taxi you take; make sure you get one from the meter-taxi stand to ensure you don’t overpay.

If possible, find a mini bus that you can share with other people. This way the cost is only about 200 baht per person. The cheapest way from the airport to Patong Beach is via an airport shuttle bus. It takes longer because you have to transfer in Phuket Town, but is only 85 baht. There is a newer bus option from the airport to the beach that costs 130 baht.

Bus

Because Patong Beach is close to many other towns, you should try to plan a few day trips to experience other parts of Phuket Island. You can take a 30 minute bus to Phuket Town that only costs 30 baht. Service runs about every 30 minutes.

Private Car

It may seem fancy, but a private car is similar to booking a taxi ahead of time. There are a couple of car services in Patong Beach where you can call and be picked up and transported to anywhere in the town.

Taxi

If you are going across town at Patong Beach, you will probably end up with a taxi. Most taxis are bright red or yellow which makes them easy to spot. Most are metered, but make sure to tell your driver where you are going and ask how much it will cost to ensure a fair price is being had.

By foot

Most of where you want to go in Patong Beach is accessible by foot, which makes it very convenient. If, however, you are visiting during the hot summer months, make sure you are hydrated.

Tuktuks

Iconic to Thailand, there are many tuktuks at Patong Beach. These can become pricey, though, if you rely on them for your whole stay.

Beaches in Patong

Shopping in Patong Beach

Shopping at Patong Beach

Food in Patong Beach

Street food at Patong Beach

Patong Beach not only offers traditional Thai cuisine, it also offers flavours from around the world. Whether you’re in the mood for French, Italian or even Russian, you can find a restaurant that serves it. Because Patong Beach is filled with so many tourists, food prices are not as cheap as the rest of the island. Expect to pay at least 150 to 200 baht for a simple meal and much higher the more elaborate you order.

Accomodation in Patong Beach

Patong Beach is very popular with tourists and so has many options to stay at. There are budget hostels, family friendly hotels and even luxury resorts. Budget places cost between 700 and 1000 baht per night. Mid-range hotels can cost between 1000 baht and 2500 baht. For resorts, expect to pay anything over 2500 baht. As always, location and type of room that you stay in will affect the price you pay.

Patong Beach is a fabulous place to relax during the day and party at night. While it is a place that has something for everyone, keep in mind that the streets will be noisy after dark and into the wee hours of the morning. If you’re looking for a relaxing retreat, it is best to stay elsewhere. If a party central place sounds perfect, then Patong Beach will not disappoint.

There are many things to do in Koh Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. Set between the island of Phuket and the Strait of Malacca, the Koh Phi Phi Islands are two islands that have plenty of things to do, both on land and in the water.

The smaller island of the two is called Koh Phi Phi Don and the larger island is called Koh Phi Phi Lee. While there are a number of smaller islands that make up the area, they are mostly just limestone rocks. You can reach the Koh Phi Phi islands by boat from Krabi Town or other places in the Phuket Province.

Koh Phi Phi Don

1. The view point

Koh Phi Phi Don viewpoint

Set almost in the middle of Koh Phi Phi Don, this viewpoint overlooks the village on the island along with the two bays. From atop this vantage point you can take amazing pictures that help to capture the beauty of the island.

The trek to the viewpoint takes about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your athletic ability. It is 186 meters above sea level and the path is nice and paved. The best time to make the trek is before lunch as you will benefit the most from the natural lighting. If you’re hungry from the climb there’s a small store that sells drinks and snacks.

2. Pirate Island Adventures

If you are into pirates and want to take a step back in time, visit this two storey house on Koh Phi Phi Don that has been done up to look like a haunted pirate shipwreck. There is an electronic shooting range where you can practice with muskets and pistols.

There is also a 5D motion theater that has the option of different rides: Cosmic Coaster, Haunted Mine, Canyon Coaster and Ravine Racer. The mini amusement park also has a haunted house with special effects and life tricks. It is guaranteed to delight both children and adults.

3. Moo Dee Bay

Located on the east coast of Koh Phi Phi Don, Moo Dee Bay has a long white sand beach and emerald green waters. It is peaceful and relaxing. There are many opportunities to snorkel in the bay and if you get hungry there is a small shack on the beach that sells food and drinks.

Tonsai Tower is a great draw for anyone interested in rock climbing. There are many companies that will provide training and lessons as well as half or full day tours.

5. Shark Watching Tours

While the tours themselves travel out to sea, most shark watching tours originate from Koh Phi Phi Don. The waters around the Koh Phi Phi islands have many species of sharks including black-tip and leopard sharks, but don’t worry as they are relatively harmless.

Most shark watching tours are half day but some can be full day and start early, about 6:00 AM. The tours take place in small groups and all of your snorkeling equipment is provides. There is also a professional guide that comes with you.

While the shark tours may vary in location, just 800 meters from Long Beach is a shark point where many sharks seem to congregate.

6. Scuba Diving

The waters off the Koh Phi Phi Islands are world renowned for their scuba diving experiences. There are many companies that operate on Koh Phi Phi Don that will provide equipment and training. Good scuba diving areas include Shark Point and Anemone Reef as well as the King Cruiser Wreck, all of which are located to the west of the Koh Phi Phi Islands.

7. Take a cooking class

Even though Koh Phi Phi Don is relatively small, there is a cooking school located on the island, called Pum’s Thai Cooking School. It is one of three locations for the business in Thailand. Here you can learn the history of Thai cuisine and what makes it so delicious. A cooking class is a great way to experience the culture and be able to bring a part of your vacation home to enjoy whenever you would like.

At the cooking school you can choose from a quick 30 minute demonstration to a more intensive 3 hour lesson. You’ll get to learn new recipes and understand more about local ingredients.

8. Go on a booze cruise

If you like to explore the area and have a few drinks at it, a party or booze cruise is a good option. You can sail around the many different Koh Phi Phi Islands on a comfortable boat, have access to drinks and meet new people. Most sail from Tonsai Bay and go from the afternoon to evening. The boat will stop at different interesting parts of the islands so that you can snorkel, kayak and even cliff jump.

9. Koh Phi Phi Leh – Maya Bay

Maya Bay became known around the world after the 2000 movie ‘The Beach’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It has stunning white sands that are powder fine with crystal clear waters. Along the edge of the beach are palm trees that sway gently in the wind. It really is a small piece of heaven.

Peak season is November to April and during this time Maya Bay is overrun with tourists. While it can seem crowded, it is still worth visiting. At the backend of the beach a small terrace was built that allows visitors to see over to Loh Sama, a nearby bay great for snorkeling.

10. Bamboo Island

Although Bamboo Island is not one of the major Koh Phi Phi Islands, it is an interesting sight to see. The island is small and is just 600 m wide and 700 meters long. The island is covered by lush vegetation and an abundance of bamboo plants, hence the name of the island. All around the mini forest is a thin strip of white sand, making it a picture perfect place.

A day trip to Bamboo Island will most likely include some snorkelling. Off the western side of the island are coral reefs that feature an abundance of sea life.

The many things to do in Koh Phi Phi Islands in Thailand represent the best that the country has to offer. A rich culture in a jungle paradise make the Koh Phi Phi Islands an amazing place to visit.

There are six islands that make up Koh Phi Phi and travelling to one of many of them is a popular day trip from Phuket. To help you get the most out of your Phuket to Koh Phi Phi day trip, here is important information you should know to help you plan an amazing adventure.

The Islands

Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island and the only one that is populated. What was once a secluded island has now become a bustling hive of restaurants, supermarkets and even tattoo parlors.

Koh Phi Phi Don Island, Thailand

The development has been restricted to a small area between the island’s most popular beaches, so you won’t need to spend a lot of time discovering the town.

Koh Phi Phi Leh is a smaller island in the south and has become popular thanks to the movie ‘The Beach’ which was filmed here.

Koh Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

It is uninhabited but still open to visitors. There is an entrance fee of 500 baht to explore the island.

Koh Mai Phai is a northern island whose name means Bamboo Island. There is a small beach here and some opportunity for snorkelling.

Koh Yung is just west of Koh Mai Phai and has a mixture of stony and sandy beaches. In the water can be found coral that has turned unhealthy due to the immense draw of snorkelers.

Bida Nok and Bida Nai are in the south and are composed of limestones. The islands feature almost completely vertical cliff walls that rise from the sea, making them amazing to see in person.

Climate

Like most of Thailand, the weather at Koh Phi Phi is divided into two seasons: the hot season, which runs from January to April, and the rainy season, which is from May to December. Year round temperatures average between 25C and 32C.

Culture

While many people visit Koh Phi Phi for its natural beauty, its cultural history is just as amazing. The area is thought to be one of the oldest communities in all of Thailand. Among the islands you can find people that are Buddhist and Muslim, but there is no religious tension. Arts and crafts are a huge part of the culture here and the practice of batik fabrics is very popular among locals.

Travel – Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

If you’re thinking of moving to another country, whether permanently or temporarily, it’s important to consider the cost of living.

Luckily, the cheapest places to live in the world are also some of the best. Countries like Cambodia, Argentina, Portugal and Colombia, for example are all beautiful and affordable. If you have the luxury of choice for where you move to next, be sure to consider one of these places.

1. Cambodia – Cost of Living in Cambodia

Securing a Visa

In order to live abroad you need a visa, and for some countries this is both expensive and difficult. In Cambodia, it is the opposite. Getting a business visa is relatively simple and if you love living in Cambodia and want to stay longer, it is only $280 to extend for another year. There are many places to extend your visa and the turnaround time is a mere days. It is really convenient.

Housing

What you pay for accommodation in Cambodia does vary, depending if it is in the country or the city but overall it is still a country with the lowest cost of living in the world. Prices for a one bedroom condo in the capitol Phnom Penh is about $250 to $300 per month, or for a multi bedroom condo $400 to $650 per month.

Cheapest Places to Live in the World

In contrast, the city of Siem Reap is much cheaper. There $600 a month will get you a villa with a pool. The further out in the country you go, the cheaper Housing becomes. If you’re retiring and looking for a cheap place to stay and a quiet local, this is a great option.

Food and Drink

Next to accommodation, another marker of the cost of living in a country is the price of Food and Drink. In Cambodia, a meal at a mid-range restaurant can be had for only $3. Beer is only $1 and a coke is less than $1. At the supermarket, bread is around $1.25 and a dozen eggs are $1.50.

Whether you eat out or prepare your own food, Cambodia has great prices for even the smallest of budgets.

2. Argentina – Cost of Living in Argentina

Securing a Visa

Argentina lives by its Latin principles which includes not having too many rules. This applies to the visa situation as well. When you first come to Argentina a visa can be expensive as the country charges you the same price as your country charges Argentinians. This is called a retaliatory visa fee policy.

However, the visa is then good for 10 years of the life of your passport, so you might not need to worry about renewing it. You can always make frequent trips every three months which then automatically renews your visa. If you forget to renew it, don’t worry as Argentina is fairly lax about it. You may be fined about $40.

Housing

Argentina is a very large country, and Housing costs vary greatly depending on where you’re living. As always, prices are more expensive in larger cities than in smaller towns. In certain parts of Buenos Aires you can find an apartment for rent for $500 to $700.  In the countryside, however, a multi bedroom house with acreage can go for the bargain price of $350.

Affordable Places to Live in the World
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buying a house in Argentina is a bit different as many people pay in cash. This may seem odd, and possibly unrealistic, but with interest rates so high, nobody wants to get a mortgage.

Food and Drink

An average meal at a restaurant in Buenos Aires will cost about $11. If you’re in a smaller town it will be considerably less. Beer is about $2.50 and a coke about $1.50. While city restaurants are not real bargains, supermarkets offer better food pricing. Bread costs $1.80 and a dozen eggs $2.00.

If you like the supermarket prices, but don’t want to cook, Argentina has very affordable as you can employ a maid or a cook for only $10 a day.

3. Portugal – Cost of Living in Portugal

Securing a Visa

If you are an EU resident moving to Portugal, all you need to do is prove your income and that you will be able to support yourself. If you can do this, then you’ll be granted permanent residency in Portugal for five years.

However, if you are not from Europe, you will most likely need to employ a lawyer to help you with the application process for a residency visa and it will take about six months.

Housing

Portugal is one of the cheapest places to live in the world and this is reflected in Housing costs. A two bedroom apartment in the city can cost about $550 to $600. As you go further out into the countryside, Housing costs get even cheaper.

If you are able to buy in Portugal, prices are very reasonable. A two or three bedroom apartment in the city would cost about $250,000 while the same apartment in a more rural area would be half the price.

Portugal was hit hard by the recession in the last decade and there are a number of homes on the market at bargain prices. And a lot of banks will even offer 100% mortgages so if you don’t have a very large down payment you can still purchase a new home.

Food and Drink

A meal at a restaurant in Lisbon would cost a person about $8 and a beer is about $1.70. A coke would cost $1.30. Overall, restaurant prices in Portugal are low and eating out is a convenient option.

For supermarket prices, bread costs $1.25 and a dozen eggs costs $2.00. Anything that is local including produce, meat and fish is very reasonable to purchase. The Portuguese love to eat delicious food and they make sure that everyone can afford it.

4. Colombia – Cost of Living in Colombia

Securing a Visa

When travelling to Colombia for short amounts of time, it is very easy to get a visa. A visa is good for three months and can be extended for only $40. However, the extension is only good for another six months. If you want to stay longer there are many options to choose from; so many that it is recommended to get advice from an attorney.

Housing

An apartment in Bogota, the capital city will cost about $650 per month. The range, though is anywhere from $400 to $1000 per month, depending on the size, location and condition of the apartment. A lot of people in Colombia end up sharing apartments so that you can get a nicer, bigger place, but pay a cheaper amount of rent.

Food and Drink

Eating in Colombia is very cheap. At a restaurant, an average meal will cost about $4. Beer is only $1 and coke is less than $1. Many people eat out regularly in Colombia because it is so affordable.

A trip to the supermarket can be overwhelming at first because of the great prices. Bread costs less than $1 and a dozen eggs costs $1.50. Overall, you won’t have to budget too much for food.

5. Malaysia – Cost of Living in Malaysia

Securing a Visa

If you live in one of the 58 countries that Malaysia is partnered with, then you can enter the country for up to 90 days without a visa. These include most European countries. After which you will need a visa, but the process is relatively easy and can be done online.

Housing

Cost of Living in Malaysia

A luxury apartment in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, costs between $750 and $1000 per month for 2 bedrooms. However, if you are on a budget, then you can find a nice apartment outside of the city limits for less than $200 per month.

Food and Drink

Malaysian food is not only delicious, it is also relatively inexpensive. You can eat at a restaurant for less than $3 a meal. Beer can be a bit more expensive, between $1 and $3, depending which bar you go to.

For groceries, bread is only $1 and a dozen eggs are $1.50. This means that whether you eat out or eat in, you won’t have to budget too much for food.

There are many cheap places to live in the world, but it’s important to pair living costs with desirability. Luckily, there are many countries to choose from that meet both criteria.

Countries with the lowest cost of living in the world like Cambodia, Argentina, Portugal and Colombia are beautiful places to spend time in and, as a bonus are all affordable, no matter what your budget.
