Learning the Thai Language

The Thai language is definitely not an easy language to learn. From the first attempt, you may fear going further, but once you break that fear, you should be able to learn with ease, as long as you are focused. Learning such a difficult language requires dedication and nothing helps more than immersion. By staying in Thailand for a long period of time, you are forced to hear and practice the language on a daily basis. Besides immersion and taking courses, there are some other options to help you develop your Thai skills.

  • Language Exchange – There are plenty of Thai’s wanting and willing to learn English since it is such a useful language. Instead of paying for courses, seek out to find a local that will teach you Thai if you teach him or her English. If you are not in Thailand, you can find Thai people via Skype to communicate with via video chat. This is a win-win situation, and many will be happy to exchange skills.
  • Websites – The good old web now provides us with free sites to learn languages, including Thai. Some even have organized lessons that are just as good as a regular course! You will find several through a Google search, but the best seem to be thai-language.com and thaipod101.com.
  • Thai TV and Films – Watching Thai television and films may be difficult and even boring if you don’t know what is going on, but they are an excellent way to learn. This method is a challenge so it’s okay to add English subtitles as this will only aid in your learning.

Before diving into any of these steps, some basic knowledge will help. The list below are common words and phrases that you can expect to use on a daily basis. Best of luck on becoming a Thai speaker!

Hello/Goodbye – Sawatdee + kha (female speaking) or khrap (male speaking)
How are you? – Sabai de mai?
I am fine – Sabai de
Thank you – Kop khun + kha (female speaking) or khrap (male speaking)
You’re welcome – Mai pen rai
