Singapore’s 47th Birthday: National Day 2012

August 9th marks a special occasion for Singaporeans; the celebration of their nation’s independence. In 1965, the country split from Malaysia to become strong and independent. Most countries celebrate their independence day with family and friends, but Singapore’s day brings the whole nation together. It is a one city country after all.

National Day Parade

The day’s festivities include the National Day parade, National Day rally, pre-parade, firework display, and a spectacular show. The National Day parade is one of the most anticipated events and will be held at The Float in Marina Bay this year. Participants are well respected individuals such as the Police Force, Civil Defense Force, Armed Forces, and the Scouts Association, to name a few. For 2012, there will be new highlights to look forward to. These include a ‘Commitment to Defense March’ and ‘Advance in Review Order’. The later being challenging, it involves over two thousand participants marching in unison. An old tradition known as the flypast will occur as well, involving several fighter jets soaring the sky above the parade.

Proud Singaporeans

The National Day rally is very important for the public to pay attention to. During this rally, the Prime Minister will give a speech addressing Singapore’s future plans and goals along with the country’s challenges. The pre-parade features a freefall display where the Singapore Armed Forces Parachute Team jumps from the sky and amazes all. As for the other events, the colorful firework display is intense while the entertaining performances fail to disappoint.

Fireworks

In response to our ever changing world technology, this year has brought on an interesting feature; a mobile application called NDPOnTheGo. It features news and updates leading up to August 9th including an option to ballot on parade tickets and an interactive game where users can win actual prizes.

This year’s extravaganza is going to be something Singapore has never experienced. Each year, National Day features a theme song to get the nation in the mood for the holiday. For 2012, all will open their ears to the beautiful “Love at First Light”, sung by Olivia Ong and Natanya Tan.
