Eleven days have been marked as public holidays by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. Each holiday refers to the cultural and religious diversity of the country. The following are the holidays and dates announced for 2013.
New Year’s Day 2013 – Tuesday, 1 January 2013
New Year’s Day is the first day of the year.
Chinese Lunar New Year 2013* – Sunday, 10 February 2013, Monday, 11 February 2013, & Tuesday, 12 February 2013
Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. The festival usually begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day.
Good Friday 2013 – Friday, 29 March 2013
Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday, is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion, resurrection and death of Jesus Christ.
Labour Day 2013 – Wednesday, 1 May 2013
Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers.
Vesak Day 2013 – Friday, 24, May 2013
Vesak is an annual Buddhist holiday celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha.
Hari Raya Puasa 2013 – Thursday, 8 August 2013
Hari Raya Puasa is Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
National Day 2013 – Friday, 9 August 2013
Celebrates the independence of Singapore.
Hari Raya Haji 2013 – Tuesday, 15 October 2013
Hari Raya Haji, known as the Festival of Sacrifice is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to Allah.
Deepavali 2013** – Sunday, 3 November 2013 & Monday, 4 November 2013
Deepavali, known as the Festival of Lights, is an important 5-day festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. It celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana and vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna.
Christmas 2013 – Wednesday, 25 December 2013
Christmas is the Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
*Since Chinese New Year lands on Sunday 10 February 2013 and Monday 11 February 2013, Tuesday 12 February 2013, will officially be marked as a public holiday.
**Since Deepavali lands on Sunday, the next day, Monday, will be marked as a public holiday. When the Indian Almanac is available, the date, 3 November 2013, for Deepavali will need to be double checked. If there is a change in date, the Ministry of Manpower will issue a media release to advise the public.
