Eleven days have been marked as public holidays by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. Each holiday refers to the cultural and religious diversity of the country. The following are the holidays and dates announced for 2018.
New Year’s Day 2018 – Monday, 1 January 2018
New Year’s Day is the first day of the year.
Chinese Lunar New Year 2018 – Friday, 16 February 2018 & Saturday, 17 February 2018
Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. The festival usually begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day.
Good Friday 2018 – Friday, 30 March 2018
Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday, is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion, resurrection and death of Jesus Christ.
Labour Day 2018 – Tuesday, 1 May 2018
Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers.
Vesak Day 2018 – Tuesday, 29, May 2018
Vesak is an annual Buddhist holiday celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha.
Hari Raya Puasa 2018 – Friday, 15 June 2018
Hari Raya Puasa is Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
National Day 2018 – Thursday, 9 August 2018
Celebrates the independence of Singapore.
Hari Raya Haji 2018 – Wednesday, 22 August 2018
Hari Raya Haji, known as the Festival of Sacrifice is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to Allah.
Deepavali 2018 – Wednesday, 7 November 2018
Deepavali, known as the Festival of Lights, is an important 5-day festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. It celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana and vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna.
Christmas 2018 – Tuesday, 25 December 2018
Christmas is the Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
