The Million Bottle Temple

Million Bottlle Temple

Our world may be becoming more and more eco-friendly, but it’s still amazing to see how far some go. A perfect example is Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew temple in Thailand which has taken recycling to a much a higher level. Better known as ‘The Temple of a Million Bottles’’, it is completely constructed with more or less 1.5 million glass beer bottles that were collected by Buddhist Monks. From bathrooms to prayer rooms, ‘completely constructed’ is not an exaggeration. Being so eco-friendly, they even created mosaic designs with bottle caps!

The collection started in 1984 and for the most part, it was donated by the local community. The bottles chosen for their construction are said to be recycled Heineken (green) and Chang (brown) bottles as they provide perfect lighting with their unfadeable colors. As you can see in the photos, the bottles are wedged into concrete.

Only 400 miles from Bangkok in the Sisaket province, The Temple of a Million Bottles is now one of the most eco-friendly places to visit in South East Asia. It is a perfect reminder of how creative we can be in the stopping of pollution. Best part is, the monks responsible in the building have no plans to stop expanding as more and more bottle donations are accepted.
