The South East Islands: Ko Tao, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan

The Gulf of Thailand offers spectacular beaches with transparent waters, colorful fish, lively bars and restaurants, water sports and more. In the province of Surat Thani are three touristy island destinations that are each special in their own way.

  • Ko Tao

If you are after a tranquil, laid-back vibe or amazing scuba diving and snorkeling, Ko Tao will be a true paradise. Less developed than its sister islands, Ko Tao has become a popular spot for backpackers wanting a cheap scuba diving certification. With crystal clear turquoise waters abundant with marine life, the island is considered the best place to dive in Thailand. Climbers are also attracted to visit Ko Tao since there are many stunning granite boulders around the island. The main touristic beach is Sairee Beach stretching 1.7km and lined with restaurants, bars, and resorts. At Sairee, many spend their days and nights laying on a pillow for hours at the beach front restaurants and bar. Regardless of the commercialism, it is still kept peaceful, but there are options to break away from it all in complete solitude. A good way to find this spot is to rent a motorbike, the island’s main form of transport, and explore each side of Ko Tao.

If spas, resorts, and extreme commercialism are what you are after, head to Ko Samui. Out of the three islands, Ko Samui is the most family oriented and offers a diverse range of activities. It is the easiest access point to the marvelous Ang Thong National Park, a pristine archipelago of 42 islands. Other famous attractions include, the Big Buddha, Namuang Waterfall, Mummy Monk, Samui Aquarium, Snake Farm, and the Secret Buddha Garden. Being the third largest island in Thailand, it makes sense why there is so much to see and do. The main tourist beaches are Chaweng and Lamai, which also offer a crazy nightlife scene.

Home to the infamous Full Moon Party, one can only imagine what to expect on the island of Ko Pha Ngan. This island is mainly for those looking to party their nights away in island ambience. Since the famous party only occurs once a month, there are loads of other crazy events such as; the Jungle Experience, Half Moon Party, Black Moon Party, Blue Moon Party, and several Pool Parties. Even party girls and gals need a break though. There are plenty of activities and isolated places to unwind with a hangover. Bottle Beach is the most isolated beach on the island so it’s worth a visit. Other activities include Thai boxing, yoga, hiking, and even archery!
