Top 5 Temples in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is home to hundreds of temples, known as wats in Thai. Each have a special significance, whether it be historical or just simply beautiful.

Majority are of Lanna style architecture. Buddhism in Thailand is not only a religion, it is a way of life and felt very strongly throughout the city of Chiang Mai. With temples on almost every corner, it can be overwhelming especially as a traveler pushed for time. The following list consists of the top five wats that should be at the top of your list.

1) Wat Prathat Doi Suthep

Nestled atop a mountain offering stunning views of the city, Wat Doi Suthep is the most touristic temple of Chiang Mai. The temple is filled with hundreds of images of the Buddha, a gleaming gold chiedi and devout buddhists praying. The atmosphere of the grounds alone give people a reason to visit. Reaching the temple isn’t as easy as others considering its high location. From the base, you can climb 300 or so steps or pay for a ride.

2) Wat Suan Dok

Unique for its many white mausoleums, Wat Suan Dok appears magical. Theses masoleums  contain the ashes of various members of the Thai royal family. The large golden chedi reaches 48 meters high and stands out significantly among the whiteness. In front of the chedi is a white entrance that appears Islamic looking.

3) Wat Chedi Luang

Wat Chedi Luang was once home to the Emerald Buddha, which now resides in Luang Prabang.  It is now home to the earthquake destructed ruins of a 600-year-old temple. This structure was once the tallest building in Chiang Mai. Today, The ruined brick chedi of Wat Chedi Luang rises to about 60m in height with its base at 44m wide. Although ruined, the chedi still remains an active place of worship with several Buddha shrines.

4) Wat Pan Tao

Unlike the glitz and gold temples, Wat Pan Tao is simple and wooden. This alone makes it worthy for a visit, especially since it is located next to Wat Chiedi Luang. There are many impressive wood carvings to be seen.

5) Wat Chiang Man

Being Chiang Mai’s oldest temple built in 1297, Wat Chiang Man is a perfect example of Lanna style architecture. A favorite part for visitors is its chedi, impressively surrounded by elephant sculptures.
