Amazing Similarities Between the Coronavirus Covid-19 and the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918
The coronavirus pandemic has well and truly captured our attention right now, and one word that keeps coming up is “unprecedented,” meaning it’s uncharted territory for everyone involved, which is true.
However, my father was born in exactly the same circumstances, during the great Spanish flu pandemic that raged from 1918 to 1920. He was called a “flu baby” and was born premature, and they thought that he was born dead so the overworked doctor the staff put him in a shoebox and put it aside while they cared for the mother and all the thousands of other patients they had . Some time later a nurse noticed the baby moving in the shoebox and my dad’s life was saved which is why I am here to write this article.
But there is more ! During this flu pandemic, people were told to stay home, like today. They were told to stay away from others, like today. There were lockdowns all over the world, where no one was allowed to go out on the streets, and some were shot for it. Meetings, work, churches, synagogues, mosques, sports – everything has been closed. This was the time when antibiotics had not been discovered, and many of the medical aids we have today were not available. Thus, more than 50 million people died worldwide, mostly from secondary causes that could have been treated by modern medicine. I remember my parents, who were born in Durban, South Africa, often talking about it and how terrible it was.
But it passed. And this one too. But it is imperative that we stay away from each other, stay home, wash our hands and face and practice very strict hygiene. The cities of the 1918 pandemic that did this for 6 weeks or more were the best and had very few deaths. This is the key: if the virus cannot spread, it dies within days. It can only live by finding a new host. Deny him that option, and he will die.
In 1920, once the virus died out, the world went on. It was tough for a while economically, but people made it through. So don’t lose hope, the sun will come back. Times are tough now, but they won’t last forever, and if we do it right and play our part, being responsible and thinking of others, it will shorten the time we all have to suffer.
Learning the lessons of the 1918 pandemic, it is obvious that we should not be in a hurry to come out of confinement. Some cities did this when the infection rate dropped and they saw a surge in cases, so we need to stay in lockdown until that enemy is dead.
So let’s take advantage of spring, it’s the sign of hope that is germinating, that this tragic global scourge will soon be only a memory, and we will once again have a picnic in the sun with family and friends, and enjoy our world !
