The Past, Present, and Future of Professional Gaming (MLG)
Major League Gaming (MLG) is the birthplace of professional gaming and has been since 2002. Now it’s 2015, professional gaming has been around for 13 years and has grown tremendously since its inception. The atmosphere, locations, games/consoles and prices have all changed over the past 13 years.
When Major League Gaming started, most people thought it was a joke more than anything. People thought, professional gaming really? Yes, truly professional gaming was a thing then. He didn’t get much attention from strangers and/or non-gamers, but that was about to change. The atmosphere at the start of MLG was nothing spectacular, the only emotional feeling you could get was from the players and the small number of spectators. It was equivalent to watching a sports game with a small number of viewers. Over time, the atmosphere has reached a whole new level; over time of course. Today the atmosphere is crazy. You can feel the intensity as a spectator, you can see the hype from the players and there are real crowds of people watching. They not only watch but support their team, just like a sporting event. Fans hold signs and cheer for their favorite teams and players. In the future, this will only grow. There will be more fans over time and that means more atmosphere and excitement. Also, over time, new players will enter the scene and add more excitement to the atmosphere. I guess we’ll see what happens.
In the early days of MLG, tournaments were held in banquet halls. The events took place in these places for some time. I don’t know when MLG got its arena but currently there is an MLG arena in Columbus, Ohio. This is where all MLG events take place. In the past, there were no events in other countries or states. Now there are events across the states and in other countries, during the summer there was an event in Texas called the X-Games, just like the athletic X-Games, but it’s for the games. The winner got gold medals like in other X-Games. There are also tournaments called G-Finity and UMG. During the last summer there were 3 events in 3 different European countries. Looking ahead, I can see this having some growth. I think there could be more arenas for MLG events and there could be more countries for tournaments. Additionally, when events were held in banquet halls, players had the monitors and systems lined up on long tables. Over time and as events were held in other locations like the arena, stands were made. Now players play in soundproof booths, with a divider next to another booth separating them. There is also a large screen above the booths for people to watch the game. On the front of the stands are the logo and the name of the teams. I think it will stay the same in the future with minimal changes.
The games have also changed over the years. When MLG started, there were games played on older versions of PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo systems. There were games such as Super Smash Bros. Melee, Soul Caliber, Call of Duty and Halo. Over time, more modern consoles added new games, as well as computers. Currently, modern consoles and computers are used in professional games. Some of the games are Call of Duty, Halo, Smite, and League of Legends. This will also continue in the future. New versions of games will be played on new consoles as soon as they are released.
Over time, the amount of prizes has increased. When Major League Gaming started, the prize money was only in the hundreds. This prize money is divided between the number of players per team. So if the prize was $100, each player only got $25, so not a lot of money at all, it was something but nothing special. Over time, the prize pool grew to thousands smaller and continued to grow. Now the prize pools are in the thousands, hundreds of thousands, and some are even worth a million dollars. Now, if the prize pool is $500,000, the first-place team doesn’t get all that money. That $500,000 is split between the top eight teams or so, and then split based on the number of players.
In conclusion, professional gaming has come a long way from nothing worth acknowledging to what it is today, a very successful and entertaining scene. It was very successful and I expect it to continue to grow and become more popular over time.
