Cheerleaders and Pee Wee Football

There is a mixed feeling about the value of cheerleaders to the youth football program. I personally think that from a financial point of view, cheerleaders make money. Insurance is cheap and there is no equipment to buy, just uniforms. Some people think they add atmosphere to any football day.

As a coach, I think cheerleading can be a pain in the ass. I suggest you check with the league and see what their rules are regarding how much cooperation and involvement you should have with them. If you have to deal with it, be sure to talk to who is in charge of the cheerleading squad for your age group. I found it best to set the guidelines beforehand so there was no misunderstanding. Be sure to let the cheerleader’s coaches know what you’ll be allowing not only for the homecoming, but also for each game. Make sure the cheerleaders don’t go above and beyond what your league rules state. For example, if no pyramids are allowed, make sure this is known.

Homecoming and/or rally night is the big event for cheerleaders, so try to give them some slack. I usually let my kids run through a banner and share a snack with the girls after the game. If you’re having a big party, ask Team Mom to get the girls’ parents involved.

Over the years, the cheerleaders are usually on the sidelines during the youth football game. They take center stage on the main pitch when you’re at half-time.
