College is all about that next new experience, especially when it comes to your education and opportunities. Most students in the sports management major want to land that amazing internship with a professional sports team dealing with baseball, basketball, or football. Personally, I wanted to change that and follow a different dream, take a diverse path and pursue a tennis-related internship. I searched and explored many options until I came across 3 different internship opportunities including: WTT also known as World Team Tennis, USTA Southern and USTA Middle States. The similarities between all of these internship opportunities are the skills needed to be successful while completing the chance to intern with tennis. Each intern said they would like a candidate who can apply each of these 5 skills in the day-to-day workplace; and if possible, they will only be prosperous.

Communication skills are the most important ability to have for a job and anything that job may entail. Every internship I watched this one was the most important skill an employer was looking for out of everyone. The USTA Southern has made it highly relevant to their internship opportunity by stating that “applicant should have strong writing and communication skills” on their website under the internship link. Being able to conduct yourself in any type of circumstance and communicate your points clearly with potential clients and colleagues is very important. Every day you will be dealing with sponsors, agents, players and other staff and promoting your confidence in what you present gives them the ability to trust what is being said. Every internship I searched for listed it as one of the top skills needed to work for them.

Having good communication is only the first step to being able to present your ideas; your writing skills are the next step. The ability to demonstrate your writing skills in a professional and presentable manner is key to impressing your current and potential employees. Refraining from using any type of slang and showing off the vocabulary you were educated with is imperative to speaking to these potential employers and with these two main skills you will go far. Personally, in my opinion, the university prepares you especially for this skill with the intensive writing courses offered and compulsory and many others. Every internship I researched, just like communication, listed it as one of the top skills needed to work for them.

Another main skill that seemed to be applied for every internship I found was the ability to be computer literate. Each page indicates that word processing or computer skills, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook, are important to know. In every business today, computers play such an important role in running the business, from arranging payroll to tracking sponsors. Excel spreadsheets are used so often throughout the day and knowing how to create one and its logistics is a huge help. Ten years ago, written notes and desk phones were all the rage, but computers and cell phones are the new technological world. It is so important for today’s college graduates to have the computer skills necessary to create any document or research any research that may be needed. Every internship I researched, just like the previous two, listed it as one of the top skills needed to work for them.

Another important skill needed to work for a sports organization or land one of the most coveted internships is the ability to work in a team. Most sports jobs/internships interact with other teams, staff, and staff and the ability to work with all of them puts you among the elite workers. To be specific with internships, while working as an intern, chances are you will be placed with the other interns to do projects and come up with ideas to help the staff. Teamwork is not only important in the world of sports, but everywhere, no matter work, friends or school, teamwork is applicable to success. Two of the three internships I researched listed it as one of the top skills needed to work for them.

I believe the ability to multi-task is the last major skill a person needs to be successful in any business setting. Multitasking is essential to multitask and complete them in a timely manner to meet deadlines. During an internship, your boss may ask you to perform several different tasks at once and it is your responsibility to take on all of them and perform them to the best of your ability. The more tasks you can accomplish and the more work you produce, the better you look into your boss’s eyes and he may realize that he doesn’t need to “guard” you and tell you task after task what you want. ‘We have to do ; take it in hand, think ahead and work hard to produce these tasks. This skill was only listed in one of the internship descriptions, but personally I think if you can’t multitask you’re a one trick pony and can’t handle the workload that accompanies most jobs.

These skills are essential for success in any job, especially in the sports industry. If you encompass these skills, they will only do one thing and that is the acquisition of the internship you desire. You may not necessarily be born with these skills, but as humans we have learned to discover and study ways to obtain these valuable assets and use them to our advantage. If you have these top 5 skills, you will see yourself moving up the organizational ladder to a more prestigious position, even if you start the journey as an intern.
