All About 12th Edition of Cricket World Cup
As you may have read in my previous article, cricket is played in three formats – Tests, One-Day and T20s. In order to decide the champion of the game, the world cup is played, in One-Day format. I’ve covered some vital information on his upcoming World Cup, which starts at the end of this month.
General
The 2019 cricket world cup, starting from 30 May 2019, is the 12th edition of the men’s cricket world cup. The showpiece event is the sport’s most coveted prize, which will be played between 10 teams. The World Cup is always played in One-Day format. The event takes place in ODI format. England and Wales will play hosts, for the 5th time overall and the first time since 1999.
Qualification
As a qualifying criterion, eight teams automatically qualified based on their One Day International Ranking. The final two spots were contested by six teams in the hotly contested qualifiers in 2018. It was an intensely contested competition in Zimbabwe. Six teams were divided into two groups, where each team played two games in the group. The top two teams from each group played the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-finals played the final.
Teams
India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka were the automatically qualified teams based on the standings. The West Indies and Afghanistan were the only ones to enter through the qualifiers. Given its rich cricketing history, the fact that West Indie was forced into qualifying was a tough pill for many cricket fans to swallow.
Based on recent form and match win record, hosts England and India are tagged as favorites to win the competition. Australia – the defending champions – are the dark horses, which may surprise a few teams to win the world cup. South Africa have been a force to be reckoned with since their debut in world cricket, never going beyond the semi-finals. Their fans are hoping that South Africa will break that jinx to sell a World Cup this time.
Schedule Summary
The event will start on May 30, 2019 and will last for 46 days. Hosts England will face South Africa in the opening game. Two semi-finals will be played on July 9 and July 11 respectively, with the final taking place on July 14, Sunday.
