Baseball At Its Best…Los Guerreros de Oaxaca

Where else but in Mexico can you park two blocks from the ballpark, buy a pair of field level seats next to the dugout, eat a personal sized pizza, have a beer, a pastry, a lollipop, and tic-tacs, and keep you entertained for over three hours on a warm, windy evening, all for around US$15.

The Mexican baseball season begins each March, with the team from Oaxaca (the Guerreros, one of 16 in this two-division league) playing its games at the Lic. Eduardo Vasconcelos Stadium, a short walk from the city center. When my wife and I attended our first game we were very impressed not without noticing some interesting and fun differences from the Skydome (now known as Rogers Centre) to see the Toronto Blue Jays . I preface my comments by stating that the league is equivalent to Triple A, which means the quality of play is extremely good, with potentials and former major leaguers in the squads…in 2005 the Guerreros had Felix Jose, former quality hitter for the Cardinals in the early 90s.

I went to the park to buy tickets a few days before the scheduled game, wanting to make sure I got premium seats, only to be told that tickets went on sale at 4pm on game day. To my great surprise, the counter opened shortly before the hour. My wife asked for a pair of “the best”. When she got back to the car, I noticed that the 55 peso bills didn’t seem to be in order, so I sent her away to inquire and swap seats if necessary. I was right…one seat was a row above the other. Who knew that when you ask to buy a pair of tickets, you have to stipulate that you want them side by side? The attendee gave my wife a hard time, but eventually gave in and swapped seats.

We returned to the park for the 7:30 opening lot, easily finding a parking space on the street. . . no $20 fee to park on lot. But where exactly were our seats? We asked no fewer than four stadium staff, with no one able to direct us to our seats, until finally someone bothered to direct us appropriately. WOW. Not only at ground level next to the visitors’ dugout (Mexico City), but covered in the unlikely event of a drizzle, and next to the bull paddock.

The game followed the typical AL format, with a designated hitter (Felix Jose for the Guerreros), and the announcer doing the same job as his counterpart in the Majors, not without prefixing the name and position of each hitter coming from an advertisement for one of the many sponsors whose presence is prominent, both on players’ uniforms and through the walls of the field. The scoreboard didn’t provide any surprises, but it took a while to figure out some of the player positions just by seeing the letter designations…no problem with SS, 1B, 2B, and 3B. But what about JI, CF and JD? I thought I had it all figured out with Center Fielder, but the other two rejected me. Next, the announcer introduced the Right Fielder, the Jardinero Derecho (JD), which literally translates to “Right Gardener”. It made sense after a while since he takes care of the grass in right field… but why isn’t the position of centre-back similarly suited to the Mexican style of naming? ? Everything fell into place in no time, with each player having a number on their shirt, but VOLKSWAGEN being the only name appearing on the back.

The ten cheerleaders were a pleasant surprise, doing an admirable job, although neither choreographed nor synchronized as well in the NFL or the NBA. However, what a treat to see these young women at the stadium with a bit of flesh on their bodies, instead of the anorectic gaze that we have become accustomed to seeing and reluctantly accept north of the border. The music on the sound system was a unique blend of what you find at MLB and NHL games with the standard “CHARGE” and other preambles, traditional Oaxacan tunes, including the Pinotepa, and well-known US and Canadian numbers from artists such as MC. Hammer and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The round five cleanup crew did their job, but without the Lone Ranger theme song to cheer them on; there was the traditional field competition for children; and hawkers convinced us to buy raffle tickets.

Although I must confess that while baseball is the most boring of the major North American spectator sports (the list in descending order being basketball, hockey, football, soccer, and baseball), since the gradual shift from Major League Baseball to Permission to Drink I have come to enjoy the game once in a while to chat with a friend or associate, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air (when the Toronto’s retractable dome was left open), and have a beer and my loads of deliciously rich dogs, donuts and ice cream bars. The Oaxacan-style scraping proved to be equally orgasmic, although not being able to drink a mezcalito or three puts a damper on libido. There was the tempting taco stand a few steps from our seats, in addition to the usual vendors weaving their way through the stands. The lineup of food includes, naturally Corona, soft drinks, hot tacos per plate wrapped in plastic and foil, a hot personal-sized canned Domino’s Hawaiian pizza with all the packets of ketchup you want, a large variety of colorfully cellophane wrapped nuts, seeds and dried fruits presented on a display card, esquites (piping large hot corn kernels into a polystyrene cup topped with mayonnaise, chili powder, lemon greens and grated cheese), as well as typical street corner stand items including gum, chocolates, hard candies and cigarettes.

Perhaps the biggest similarity to going to an MLB game was that the home team lost…just like in Toronto after the two outliers of the early 90s. Although I don’t m don’t expect catching a Guerreros game to be on the priority list for tourists spending only a week in the city, for residents and travelers vacationing here for longer stays, baseball in Oaxaca offers a fun and relaxing way to spend a few hours. The regular season runs until the end of July, with the four playoff series starting after that and continuing until early September. You can attend the stadium to learn about promotions, including T-shirt and cap days, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
