The Most Polite Man In The World Did Kwon Bup Karate
I want to tell you about the most polite man in the world and the art he studied, which is called Kwon Bup Karate. I’ll tell you a story about a fight he was in in a moment, but let me tell you first that he never, in the seven years I knew him, brought up the voice. What makes this truly amazing is that he taught all manner of outlaw bikers, including the Hells Angels, in San Jose in the sixties.
His name was Robert J. Babich, and he learned Kyokushinkai karate from Don Buck, who was probably the first Westerner to teach this art in the United States. He then learned Kang Duk Won karate from Norman Rha, and it was probably the first time the art was taught in the United States. He then formulated seven distinct kata himself and called them Kwon Bup.
One night he was at a bar with some of his rowdiest students. Don’t judge, things were what they were back then, and it wasn’t uncommon for guys to go out and test their martial arts in the real world. Anyway, Bob was with a group of 1%, and they were having drinks, laughing, and causing an uproar.
Half-drunk Bob got into an argument with a cowboy (yes, there were cowboys in San Jose in the ’60s, real cowboys), and the guy pulled his fist out and… .a Hell’s Angel (Walt) picked up the cowboy by the neck and belt and banged his head against the bar. “I just saved your life, man,” and Walt got the cowboy back on his feet. Everyone laughed.
A little later, the bikers decided to head for greener pastures. Bob walked across the parking lot towards his car and suddenly had a change of heart. Totally under the influence, he muttered, “I have to go fix this with this guy,” and walked back into the bar.
The cowboy in question was looking at Bob through the front window, and he asked for help from one of his friends, and they stood on either side of the door. Bob walked into the bar and the two thugs jumped on him. Bob was short and thin, they were pretty big, and what happened next was… not what anyone expected.
Bob twisted his hips and stretched out his palms, and the two cowboys came back into the air. Now I knew that hip twist, we used to do it all the time in class, I thought it was for…well, I don’t know why I thought it was. Bob, however, had just used this hip twist, and he had thrown two really big guys through a bar, and hadn’t really hurt them!
He was the most polite man I’ve ever known, even under the influence, and he just wanted to get along with people. However, when things happened, he did his thing and still managed to not hurt anyone. The real blessing is that he left his knowledge in the seven kata called Kwon Bup Karate.
