Mahindra & Mahindra was established in 1945 as Mahindra & Mohammed in Ludhiana. When Pakistan was established, Mohammed of Mahindra and Mohammed went to Pakistan to become Pakistan’s first finance minister. Hence, the company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948.
The company assembled Willys Jeep in India. It added the manufacturing of other utility vehicles like LCVs and agricultural tractors. Eventually, it moved from manufacturing army vehicles and tractors to automobiles and exporting them to a global market. It is currently India’s largest sports utility vehicle manufacturer with its banner model the Scorpion also known as the Mahindra Goa when sold in Italy.
The company, also known as M&M, is India’s largest SUV manufacturer. It bought car factories in China, UK, USA and partnered with other international automakers like Renault SA, France and with International Truck and Engine Corporation, USA.
They also export to many countries. Its global subsidiaries are based in Italy as Mahindra Europe Srl., in the United States as Mahindra USA Inc., in South Africa as Mahindra South Africa and in China as Mahindra Tractor Co. ., ltd.
In April 2007, the company built the Logan, its first passenger car with Mahindra Renault collaboration. With another joint venture, this time with International Truck, USA, Mahindra built its first heavy duty truck department with the Mahindra Navistar. Mahindra & Mahindra manufactures a full line of vehicles, including CUVs, LCVs and three-wheelers. It has more than 20 models similar to the Scorpio and the Bolero in multi-utility vehicles.
As India’s leading SUV producer, M&M moved fast in manufacturing various SUV models including the small 5-passenger turbodiesel engine, the Mahindra Xylo in January 2009 which sold over 15 000 models.
M&M also has car assembly plants in Brazil where Scorpio Pik Ups with single or double cab pick-up bodies are made along with SUVs.
The company enjoys a global reputation for excellence and has been ranked among India’s top 10 companies. Currently, the company plans to sell the diesel SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States through an independent distributor, Global Vehicles USA, beginning in February 2010.
