When I was a child, I received the gift of great athleticism. I was heads and tails above my peers, athletically. You name it; I was the best on my team. Football, baseball, basketball and possibly, at an older age, hockey! When I was a young boy of twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen, I was among the tallest on my basketball team, and in basketball, height is an incredible thing. I didn’t have good stamina (because I was too lazy to take the pain of sprinting in the wind), nor was I 100% most of the time, but I was still the leader in rebounds and I was still scoring under the rim. I had a not-so-good jump shot, and to be honest, I really didn’t practice a lot of drills, besides having a natural talent. Eventually people started getting taller than me, and by the time I got into about tenth grade, I was no longer among the tallest kids my age. Basketball, at least for a living, I thought, was out of the question. During those brief years though, when I was taller than most, I had a success that told me I could have been great. My size and speed are all I needed to win every 1v1 tournament held throughout the county. I sent kids, whose dads trained them like sideline maniacs (you know, parents who demand success)? home in tears, after they realized they might not achieve their dream, because I beat them so easily. Some of them have been the best, until they play me. I never went over 6’0, but it was enough to shine, without really training.

You literally have a “heads up” on the competition

Without a doubt, the easiest job of all of sports is that if you’re over 7’0 and you’re good enough to be on a professional team, you’ll have a luxurious life and the honor of not having to worry about getting hurt no more, for the most part. I was able to get a taste of how easily I was slightly taller than most of the other kids in my county’s basketball league. I would have had an easy time — if I had had the good sense to keep playing, instead of giving up. I was the fastest by far and I could also throw my weight. Once everyone caught up with me, in my mid-teens, I became easily intimidated, largely due to my insecurities about everything else (another story). Although it didn’t turn out that I was very insecure as a teenager, I still would have been intimidated (height is a formidable weapon). I should have trained more if I wanted to qualify for the pros, but I wouldn’t have had to do anything drastic to get there. I’m sure I could have got by with the minimum of work.

Dude, don’t waste it!

If you’re over 6’10” tall and athletically gifted, I envy you sir! the pros, because there are so few “trees” out there that have decent coordination. Don’t be intimidated by other big men! If you’re Caucasian, do not be intimidated. I call it what it is; some of my best friends when I played basketball regularly were of a different race than mine. More in basketball than in any other sport. Short people really need to practice jumping if they want to play in the pros, but like I said, being a center in the pros is pure work, well paid and fun. Enjoy it while you’re young!
